ICS (Internet connection Sharing)

This is used to share a single Internet Connection among all computers in the network. This is the preferred method of accessing the Internet in networks. But heavy usage can slow down the speed of the Internet Connection.

To achieve this, a computer has to be configured as the ICS Server where all internet requests will be sent and received. This is the computer to which the internet line is directly connected to. In case of dial up internet this computer will require a modem or in the case of cable internet it will require two network cards .


Steps:

1.First in the ICS server after the internet line is connected a dial up has to be created.Right click on My Network Places Properties

 2. Select option Create a New Connection Next 

3. Select Option Connect to the Internet Next 

4. Select your connection type from the following options Next Connect using a dial up modem.( This is for internet connection through our phone line) Connect using a broadband connection that requires a username and password.(This is for ADSL internet connection) Connect using a broadband connection that is always on 

5. Type a name for the connection for example Wlink. Next 

1. Type the username and password for the connection which is provided from the ISP Next 

6. Select option create add a shortcut to this connection on the desktop for easier access. Finish

  Enabling Sharing on the ICS Server:

1.    Right click on My Network Places| Properties

2.    Right Click on the dial up | Properties

3.    Select the Advanced Tab and select option allow other network users to connect through this computers internet connection.

Also the following option will be displayed:

·         Establish a dial-up connection whenever a computer on my network attempts to access the Internet. (if we enable this then other users can connect to the internet it is preferred to keep this disabled if we don’t want to give users this right)

 

Enabling Sharing on clients:

1.    Simply go to My Network Places| Properties.

2.    Then Local Area Connection | Properties.

3.    Open Internet Protocol and then in the default gateway field type the IP address of the ICS Server. |OK |Close.
